SMB Hiring Vision

Role: UX leader

Participants: Product, Engineering, UX from across the organization

Timeline: 6 months

Results: Shaped the product direction over 5 years

Indeed is incredibly effective and efficient with A/B testing - this method is used with almost every product release. But there are concerns about reaching a local maximum with A/B testing - what if we are missing opportunities by iterating continuously, and not exploring new directions or ideas?

Let’s explore where the product could go over the next 5 years.

We started with a workshop to collect ideas

We brought together designers from across the SMB organization (and around the world) to collaborate and design a vision for Indeed’s employer products.

As the facilitator and lead, I structured our activities using the Google Ventures Design Sprint Methodology.

We interviewed SMEs, mapped out the end-to-end user journey, identified a critical storyline with key moments for users, and then started designing and building.

Together, we crafted an experience

Starting from the primary marketing pages, we wanted to lead with data and the message that your candidates are on Indeed.

The goal is to deliver candidates instantly and demonstrate how each job seeker meets the job requirements.

The hiring process is ultimately successful when employers and job seekers connect quickly and easily.

Throughout the job posting experience, we wanted to guide employers so that their jobs would be set up for success. Indeed would do the heavy lifting to create high-quality job posts.

We wanted candidates to introduce themselves through additional application materials, like an audio intro to give employers insight into the person behind the resume.

Regardless of their busy lives, they can connect from anywhere with a few quick taps and Indeed does the rest.

To promote the vision, we told a story.

Portions of this story have been shared publicly, like the interview messaging concept, which was demonstrated at Indeed’s Futureworks conference.

The vision is a success!

5 years after this 5-year vision, Indeed shipped many of the vision’s key ideas:

  • Audio introductions for roles that typically receive a high volume of applications, like customer service representatives

  • Helper content that guides employers to improve the quality of job posts

  • Highlights in the candidate list that demonstrate how candidates meet job requirements

  • Improved messaging platform that supports features like direct-to-interview
